The process
Similarly to "Types of data", another division of research is into qualitative and quantitative. So, it's quite important to know the distinguishing features and the mechansism of data visualization.
So, a pair of posters was needed to convey the entire message for both forms. Starting with qualitative research, the focus is on the individual and the theories that arise as a result of our behavior.
The first poster in this set helps you with the "why" of qualitative research, possible study designs, and the process of conducting it. The second poster supplements the why with the "how" to present the data.
Frequently overlooked and neglected in clinical practice, qualitative research is incredibly helpful for understanding the human being as it is. But it comes with several challenges in order to be properly executed.
First, it is exploratory, meaning dissociation from the outcome; Second, the design is freely created by the researcher - a blessing and a curse; and third, it is flexible, making it difficult to define study parameters.
When it comes to visualization, the same data can be (misleadingly) presented with multiple charts and graphs. Each type of visualization carries a specific challenge that renders it fit or unfit for use.
Nailing down the proportions between imagery and font size, especially for charts, was the real challenge here. I started with B&W and slowly implemented qualitative data colors from the "Type of Data" poster.
I am especially grateful to the second poster because of the steep maturation process I went through with Adobe Illustrator when making it. It took quite some time before I felt comfortable making the posters.
Joining two posters in a harmonious visual relationship always bears a risk. But they share a common theme and in the end, it only made sense they come together as a set.
Regardless of whether you conducted a qualitative study or not, this set will provide you with sufficient guidance to devise a study, coupled with an adequate strategy on how will you visualise the data.
The first poster discusses the features of qualitative research, the study types, and the design process. While asking yourself questions, use the different segments to understand what you're actually doing.
The second poster gives a set of charts and graph you can use for different types of qualitative data. A suitable chart can completely change the perception of study results.
